The HIFU unit in Farrer Park Hospital, Singapore was opened in July, 2018. It is headed by Dr Lee Keen Whye, who is one of the founding board member of APAGE and founding director of Singapore O&G. The HIFU unit is the first HIFU Center around the world opened to all doctors in Singapore. Currently a group of 10 doctors perform HIFU treatment in the center.
In response to the call by Dr. Lee, an event themed, “Connecting the World with Love and Preserving the Womb” was held on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2020, code named IWD-HIFU.
Despite the constraints of COVID-19, IWD-HIFU, a multi-center HIFU treatment event, was initiated in Chongqing, China. Forty one Chinese and overseas HIFU centers simultaneously performed HIFU surgeries for women patients. This IWD-HIFU event was broadcasted live by connection to the Haifu Telemedicine Big Data Center headquartered in Chongqing.
Dr Lee said while calling for the International Women’s Day event – “The World is preoccupied with fighting COVID-19, climate change and economic uncertainties. However, women’s health and wellbeing should not be overshadowed by these events. While we cannot avoid sufferings of women caused by nature and sickness, we should lessen their pain with whatever means”.
During this COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Lee is still doing HIFU treatment every week via the aid of tele-medicine support.
