Parents are often faced with questions surrounding their infants’ sleep schedules, especially first-time parents. “Why is my child not sleeping well?” and “When will my child sleep through the night?” are some of the common issues that parents tend to raise.
Dr Petrina Wong, Consultant Paediatrician, addressed these questions at a webinar at a Symposium with Annabelle Kids and shared the possible causes of poor sleep in children. Good sleep habits, which include having a regular sleep schedule and bedtimes should be established from infancy, however, there is no single absolute solution that fits all children as all babies are individual and unique. Parents should consult a doctor if they suspect their child is having a sleep problem, “especially if the sleep problems are unusual, persistent, frequent and the child is not sleeping well or if there are concerns about the child’s daytime behaviour.
Apart from general paediatrics which includes newborn screening and developmental assessments, Dr Wong also specialises in respiratory and sleep conditions like pneumonia, childhood wheezing, asthma, allergic rhinitis, snoring, sleep apnea and behavioural sleep problems.
